Time to Hibernate

During this time of year, some people may have a hard time relaxing due to constant messages from social media that tells us to party, gather, purchase, be cheerful, and go out and do things. But what if you don’t feel up to it and just want to stay in? That is completely okay! Relaxing and staying home can be thought of like hibernation. Warm-blooded mammals are known to hibernate during the winter, so why can’t we?

It can get so stressful during the holidays that we can often forget to practice self-care. Some people can get what is commonly called “FOMO”; or fear of missing out. An example of this may be that you feel guilty for missing a party or special event. Having this fear can create and even worsen anxiety. This is why regularly practicing self-care and hibernating is so important. And not only is taking time out good for your mental health, but it is also great for your physical health as well.

Some of the many ways that hibernation is good for the body and mind:

· It can recharge the mind and body by creating more energy.

· When reducing stress, you can reduce inflammation.

· It can help you heal emotionally by processing the emotions.

· It can help you avoid or overcome burnout, which reduces concentration and motivation to get tasks done.

· By relaxing the muscles and nerves of the body, we can increase our productivity.

A few ideas when you feel like you want to hibernate:

· Relax and clear your mind by practicing mindfulness and mediation

· Catch up on TV shows and movies

· Practice yoga

· Spend quality time with family and friends

· Practice gratitude

· Take on a new hobby

· Have a spa night by making a face mask and painting your nails

· Tackle a craft project you saw on Pinterest

As you can see, hibernation and self-care are very important, especially during this season. Just remember that it’s okay to say no to that holiday party and take some time for yourself! Not only will it be beneficial to you, but you might even inspire those around you to do the same.
