I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all! Everyone needs help now and then, without making them weak. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the ability to reach out. Believe it or not, you already have strengths that you’ve used before, that perhaps you’ve forgotten about.
Perhaps this problem that feels overwhelming is making it difficult to access your strengths. In our work together, Intuitive Healing will help you identify what those strengths are, and how to implement them in what is happening now.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
Sometimes, speaking to a non-family member can create a safe space for you, without feeling like what you say will reach an external audience. In other words, therapy is completely confidential.
Additionally, a mental health professional can help you:
- Approach your situation in a new way
- Teach you new skills
- Gain different perspectives
- Listen to you without judgment or expectations
- Help you listen to yourself
Lastly, if your situation provokes negative emotions and you’re confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you may avoid that person to not be reminded of a difficult time in your life.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication alone cannot solve all problems. Rather, medication treats the symptoms. At Intuitive Healing, our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue. Together, we will dig deep into your behavior and introduce you strategies that may help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals. Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy, but it’s not your only option.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Because each person has different goals for therapy, the treatment will vary by each individual. After we get to know you a little bit, we tailor our therapeutic approach to best fit your specific needs.
How long will it take?
Unfortunately, this is a complicated figure to determine, since everyone’s circumstances are unique. The timeline for you to accomplish your goals through therapy depends on three things:
- Your desire for personal development
- Your commitment
- Driving factors that led you to therapy in the first place
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
We are so glad that you’re dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions! Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. After all, we only see each other for one session a week. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.
My partner and I are having problems. Should we be in individual counseling or come together?
If you and your partner are concerned about your relationship, we would initially work with both of you together. After this work, if one of you would like to continue in individual sessions, we could work with only one of you. It is not helpful to move from individual therapy into couple’s work with the same therapist due to of potential trust issues.
What are the benefits of a holistic approach to mental health?
Traditional mental health (talk therapy) can help individuals get to a certain level of healing. However, many people still find themselves stuck and are searching for alternatives to talk therapy. Meanwhile, medication can be an important part of a treatment plan for some, but others may be looking for alternative ways to manage and relieve their symptoms.
A holistic approach includes healing for the mind, body, and spirit with natural alternatives. All of these elements can lead to a deeper level of wellness that improves your life in the long run.
What is energy work?
All living things are made of energy. Emotional, physical, and spiritual wounds we’ve experienced are often energy trapped in the body. Energy psychology is a method used to shift the energy of our limiting thoughts and beliefs, replacing them with thoughts and beliefs that are more aligned with who we truly are. Energy work techniques include talking exercises, guided meditation, and hands-off healing techniques, such as Reiki (click here to learn more about Reiki).
What does spirituality have to do with mental health?
As unique individuals, we are more than our physical bodies and minds―we’re spiritual beings. Due to negative experiences with religion, our family beliefs, or traumatic events, we can disconnect from our spiritual selves. This can often lead us to feeling like something is missing. Connecting mind, body, and spirit is essential to feel whole and live an authentic life. Spirituality is an individual experience and there is no single way to practice it.
